Introduction
The Stop Disasters Game continues to grow as a global learning tool for resilience. Now available in 11 languages, the free game is helping players around the world experience what it takes to build resilient communities and reduce disaster risk.
Developed by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) as an educational tool, the game allows players to step into the role of a community planner preparing for hazards such as floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, and wildfires. With a limited budget and time, players must make critical choices about infrastructure, preparedness, and protection measures - learning firsthand how smart planning saves lives.
A global classroom for resilience
New Japanese, Croatian, and Romanian versions of the game have just been launched:
The Japanese version was unveiled during the final week of Expo 2025 Osaka, where it drew enthusiastic crowds in the UN Pavilion.
The Croatian and Romanian versions were released to mark the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, celebrated worldwide on 13 October.
With these new translations, the Stop Disasters Game is now playable in 11 languages, including Chinese, Croatian, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, and Spanish.
From classrooms to COP 30
The translation into Brazilian Portuguese has already made an impact in classrooms. In the municipality of Barcarena, students explored disaster prevention through gameplay, learning how risk-informed decisions shape safer communities. Waldeci Batista Lisboa Junior, Teacher of Digital and Technological Culture from the Department of Education of Barcarena welcomed the initiative: "By promoting the Stop Disasters Game in the classroom, we can see that our students, in an interactive and gamified way, learn how to deal with the pressing challenges of our time." The activities are part of local efforts to promote disaster risk awareness among young people and the game will be featured at the Barcarena booth during COP 30 in Belém, Brazil, in 2025.
Learning through play
The Stop Disasters Game is a flexible resource that educators and professionals can easily adapt to different contexts:
In professional training, facilitators use it to illustrate how decisions about planning, investment, and preparedness can affect real-world outcomes.
In academic settings, universities integrate the game into their disaster risk management curricula to bridge theory and practice.
In communities, local planners and residents play together to explore how to make neighborhoods safer.
Now playable anywhere
The Stop Disasters Game now fully supports mobile phones and tablets. It can be played directly in browsers or installed for offline access, making it easier than ever to bring resilience learning into classrooms, workshops, or community events.
With its growing number of translations and new accessibility features, the game is becoming a truly global platform for risk education.
